Liverpool Pics - 1860s

These shots are from a UK wide collection, dating from the 1860s, which is being split up on ebay. 5 sold for nearly £50. These are the Liverpool ones which I cunningly saved for us all Smile

The Nelson monument unveiled in 1813 seen here fifty years later. The chained figures are said to represent prisoners of war, not slaves, as many assume.

The Sailors Home. Stood in Canning Place from 1850 to 1969.

William Brown Street.

George III monument seen in London road. Moved from Great George Square to its present location in 1822 after eleven years in situ.

Prince Albert statue at St George's Plateau.

Great pic's DKL,but is the George 3rd monument in Great George's square,as it doesn't look like London rd,though it's obviously changed,over time?
DKL

Background has just changed over time Mojo. It's the same row with the bathroom place nowadays, but as it was.  It's there on an 1840s map and this pic deffo not before then.

Great Images  Dan, thanks for sharing. They were all great , and I was particularly impressed by the Nelson Monument and the London Rd Statue shots,, Ive never seen railings around the Nelson Monument and I've never seen those buildings in Monument Square-London Rd.
The date you have for the Sailors home 1969 is the date it closed but it wasn't demolished until 1974.

How are the Sales of your two latest Liverpool books going, I hope the Shops have adequately stocked them in now.
DKL

Good clarification on the Sailors Home. Me neither with the railings. I wonder how long they lasted?

No news on latest sales yet. They dont do a count until 6 months so a while yet. I imagine they wont be anything astronomically though   Shocked

good Luck with them , I have both ,and they are a great read. I was in the Maritime Museum today and they appeared to have a good stock of them .
DKL

Oh really? I'll have to go and see. So much stuff happens/doesn't happen with publishers. Authors are really just cash cows. Cogs in their machine.

Thanks D! Any idea why the statue was moved,at all?
DKL

The exact phrase was:

"...be removed to a more public situation in London Road, the commanding entrance to the town."

Basically, to show off to the tourists  Laughing
MOJO

..which makes sense! It's just that more than a few monuments in Liverpool, seemed to have been moved, for one reason,or another,or have disappeared altogether!
I've just had a look at Great George's square,as it is now,and I think the statue would look fine there! What do you think?

DKL

Nowadays yeah, London Road has become a bit...unfortunate
MOJO

I'm surprised it has never been vandalised,in any way,as far as I know, considering it's present position! Must say something about making things difficult to climb, and even the lettering is intact, but for one or two ,which have probably just fallen off?! Smile

have to agree the Georgian terraces at the back look like the ones from Great Georges Square (still standing today & very well they look too).

sorry not sure how to add a picture but this link should take you to a pic of the terraces as they are now.

strange thing is, has that statue moved in London rd in the last 10/20 years?? as i can't even remember seeing it in London Road?? ever?? also if it was moved to welcome visitors to the city (what a poor excuse for moving it from where it was meant to stand) then its facing the wrong way.
