These are great Barbie, obviously prior to its renovation, but its splendour is still evident even in this neglected state.. Love that Memorial / Foundation Stone too. it must pre-date the Main Hospital building...maybe its from the first hospital building that stood there previous to 1880s
Alice

Great pics B.B. and Barbie of a beautiful building.
MOJO

Great pic's,Barbie! Some of them look familiar, and might now be part of the Victoria gallery! Contrary to popular belief, much of the hospital has lain moreorless, untouched, since it's closure!

Barbie

Awww, that's nice to hear someone having lovely memories. So glad. You will have to share any stories, funny or sad, maybe ou have photos you would like to share.
Lizzie

Barbie I †will certainly think of some stories....pics sadly I have no more....all my †'old' pics got stolen en route to SA......along with my SRN badge and lots of other stuff as well

Here is my training school badge though..it used to say The United Liverpool Hospitals School of Nursing but got changed when the old hospitals closed  down and the 'New Royal opened

Lizzie

One tragic story from The David Lewiss Northern was the murder of a young nurse, Alice Jones. An American soldier, Joseph Hutty, had enlisted in The Canadian Expeditionary Force, and had been admitted to the Northern suffering from shell-shock. He became infatuated with Nurse Jones but, rejected by her, shot her dead outside the hospital entrance. The bullet marks were in the door which remained in place til day the hospital got knocked down

He was found guilty but the jury recommended mercy on the grounds of his acute mental condition. Sentenced to death, Hutty was finally reprieved after a petition signed by the Lord Mayor amongst others persuaded the Home Secretary to commute the sentence.

Her ghost was said to walk the wards at night.....the first ward of the hospital was ward one....acute medical.....they were long wards and the first beds on the right was were the terminally ill pts †were....right opposite Sisters Office.....I had only been nursing for six months and was on my first night shift.....I went to check on one of these pts and he told he liked the smell of my lavender perfume.....I never wore it and we were not allowed to waer perfume any way........he also told me I looked like an angel with my blonde hair.....I had †mousey brown hair...... Shocked

I was on my own at the time and when the senior nurse came back from her break I told her and she said 'Oh thats Alice'.......apparently many pts spoke of seeing her before they passed on

A pic of the Northern..you can see the door I mentioned.....the windows to the left of the door as you look at the pic †was the nurses home......the second window in on the second floor was my room..... Laughing

MOJO

Fascinating stuff,Liz! Can't say I have any memory of the Northern, though it only went in the 70's,I think?

Here it is in 1906....

....and in 1966.
Lizzie

Oh wow they are fabulous pics....in the first one the windows under the clock were the doctors residence.....and in the second pic the building to the right was St Paulís  Eye Hospital

The Northern closed its doors in 1978.....
