Pier Head area

Not my image , but I like this one.

Barbie

That's nice BB. Just 2 of the 3 Graces on it.  Smile
MOJO

Nice pic' B.B.! You can see that's how big Georges dock was,so maybe there are passageways along to all three graces?
Lightning Lad

Would like to add a few pics of Georges Dock pre Liver building. They might interest you bb.
Need help though. Don't know how to.

Georges Dock 1901

This is one of a few of Georges Dock taken by the then City Engineers. The use of wooden specialised scaffolding is quite amazing. This is all obviously pre Liver buildings.
Alice

Great photo Lightning Lad, pleased that you have been able to put it up!   Thanks for sharing it with us and look foward to any more you may have.
Lightning Lad

Thanks Alice, getting into the swing of this now.
Lightning Lad

I'm having a problem showing more....keep getting error messages. Maybe the pictures are too big. Might have to try something else....question is "What?"
MOJO

Hi L.L.,
loading pic's can be a bit temperamental, some times it will, and sometimes it won't! So try again, another time! Nice pic' by the way! Smile

Some thing to do with the National cycle Network..apparently funded by The royal Bank of Scotland.
I have seen them in Sefton Park & in Princess park...there must be others  about to.

Heres the View that we are now left with of the Pier head area from around Albert dock.

What do you reckon
Alice

I don't like it and the planners should have thought it out!
MOJO

Sorry B.B. that's not really the Pier head,it's  Canning  dock, but I know what you mean about the view! But it was mainly,a derelict dump previously, and though the black buildings aren't to everyones taste,I think it looks 100% better than it did, though that classic view has gone! Looking at the number of tourists around there, these days,it seems a much more popular place to visit, than it has been for many years!
Jan

Hi everyone ,,I don't like the view now ,, just don't like the black buildings ,,, I can never understand ,,why planners never take into acount how the new builds will look and  fit in with the old....Great photo's though, good subject to discuss

Barbie

Nova Scotia, Mann Island

**What is Nova Scotia? The dock, the boat? I'm confused on that.
brainbox

Great Pic that Barbie....With a bit of forward thinking That area could have been retained and redesigned / refurbished as A heritage Centre with tourist themed shops and cafes etc.

The' Novia Scotia 'was a nick name given to that area because of the Large number of Ships that used to dock there from Novia Scotia Area of Canada. I think they brought in Cargoes of Wood from the Canadian Forests
Barbie

Ta for the info matey.  Cool
MOJO

Just had a quick look, but couldn't find anything specifically about the Cunard Liverbird??

Alder Hey when it was still a poor law/workhouse hospital.
dpnewbold

I like that one barbie. It would make a good one to do a comparison shot of.
That view has changed little in 100 years, apart from the house in the centre of pic.
This is my childhood area. Used to go up to Alder Hey to play in the grounds...lol

Laughing I do get it right sometmes!  Razz
Yes I remember them bins, no kid ever walked past them without jumping onto them. Or was that just me the rebel?  Laughing

Pier Head bus Station
MOJO

This was behind those bus stops, with a bin in front of it!

Jan

That is so terrible to put a bin infront of any sort of memorial ,,,, how could that of happened ,,,, if i were the workman ,I would of refused to put it there ,,,,,,,,,,,Jan xx

Some great pics here ,, how i remember it Barbie ,,,,the yellowish tiles ,, up the top river views over the water,,turn around and looking at the Liver and ports,,,,,,,,,,,,,,    wasn't it called dock office then??????,berni inn,,, buses,, jeeez came down here fast ,and so busy,,,Jan xx
Barbie

That sounded deliberate Mojo, was it do you think? Or just thick head  council people?

Maybe! I used to get the 14c there, otherwise I'd never have known it existed! You can only question why, the older generation used to say,"kids these day's don't have any respect" when it seems pretty apparent, that they didn't have much themselves!! (at least some of them!)
MOJO

Some more tiles! (is it me,or are those stairs, going down??)

fantastic period Shot of the pier Head  I love that one Barbie, is it also the Entrance to St Georges Baths ,or were they gone by that time ?

Maybe,as they weren't demolished till 1906! Smile
brainbox

Ta. MOJO, did all that Grand frontage go in 1906 aswell ?
Barbie

Such a shame.
Barbie

I love this.
Nova Scotia district of Mann Island. No date.
brainbox

That should have been retained and reborne as a Visitor heritage Centre for the Maritime History of Our Port......I think the black monstrosities are in place on site these buildings now

Rolling Eyes
Barbie

Confused  Rolling Eyes
MOJO

It would have been great to keep that area, but it did go,many years ago, before heritage was a twinkle! Sad

The same area,in recent past.

....and as it was in it's heyday,as various shipbuilding yards.I think the last ships were built in the early 1900's,and the dock was redeveloped some time after.

Barbie

Pier Head Bus Station being built
Barbie

Landing Stage, The Hospital Ship. Orange and the White Star liner Mauetania

Barbie

Mann Island and the pool offices.....whatever they were!

MOJO

That's a more modern view,of that pic' of Nova Scotia, you posted! The "pool" was where you got your ship's name! Smile
Barbie

Look at the cars and dinky trucks, they look like toys.  Razz

Pier Head Flood 1956

Next two are from 1967

Alice

Those photo Barbie are great particularly the flood one.
Barbie

I'm enjoying the last one Alice, memories of running on the walls around the grass bits (whatever they were called!)
MOJO

Nice pic's,but I think it looks better now! Smile
brainbox

Loving the Colour pics they take me right back to days out as a kid setting off for a family day out to New Brighton....These pics were from a time when there was no Albert Dock Tourist complex and The Pier Head  was the only City centre area open to view the River.. No matter how often the scene changes ,these late 60's images will always have a place in my heart
MOJO

Yeh,that's so true, that it was the only place to see the river!
Barbie

Car Ferry Terminal. No date.

Looking towardsChavasse Park, now the Liverpool 1, showing the Holiday Inn on Paradise Street.
Barbie

There's them yellow tiles again!

I love this one, can anyone tell me exactly where abouts at the Pier Head it was?

Pump House.
MOJO

Looks like Prince's dock landing stage, with Riverside station, behind.there's just this framework left, which is further along!

Nice tile pic'there! Smile
brainbox

The first pic is a good one taken a bit more far over than most images that you get of the Pier head area.
Princes Dock, and Riverside station over to the left in the distance. and the Memorial is the Joint Titanic &  Engineers Monument, recently refurbished in preparation for the Centenary celebrations of the Launch of the Titanic.....nice shot.......dont know the date .as a guess Late 70s / early 80s

The Holiday In one, would that be the canning Place,Steers House complex over on the right
..and the Albert Dock Pic..Wow ! look at the level of mud in that basin
Barbie

Thanks for your pics Moj and thanks Beeb for the info.
MOJO

...amazing thing is,that framework is wood,so I looked it up,and it's Lignum Vitae,more hardwearing than steel,etc,and of course,doesn't rust!
Barbie

Brill!  Cool
