Thrillseekers in their element as 115ft zip wire challengeLiverpool's zip wire challenge got off to a flying start as thrillseekers queued to experience whizzing over thousands of shoppers at speeds of up to 40mph.
People of all ages waited to be equipped with a harness and helmet, before ascending the 180 steps to the top of the 115ft structure on Church Street.
They were then safely attached to the zip wire and sent hurtling over the city centre in the space of a minute, travelling more than the length of the pitches at Goodison Park and Anfield combined.
A number of people came to a juddering halt shortly before reaching the landing platform, and had to be dragged the remaining distance by means of a long hoop. In some cases, even this was not sufficient and one of the organisers had to go out on to the wire to physically pull the thrillseeker to safety.
