Walking

how many of our members like walking ?
there are so many interesting places to see on merseyside & beyond
and it keeps you fit at the same time
do you have any favorite places to walk

J.R.
MOJO

One of our usual tricks was to get a bus to various destinations, then spend the day gradually making our way back to the city centre,or home,by walking! Amazing what you can see,if you give yourself the chance!
brainbox

I agree.

Doctors and Health specialists recommend regular walking as a great benefit in reducing a persons chances of suffering Heart Attacks.

This crazy weather must be disrupting a lot of exterior related hobbies and pastimes.....such a nuisance .

Alice what sort of reply was that  . Shocked ....

Barbie

I love walking, no matter if it around the streets of Liverpool or in the countryside. It's been a while since I've been up a mountain but I am hoping to get back into that.
I can walk for miles and miles but don't ask me to run, I am no good at that.
MOJO

I keep meaning to walk along the shore,up to Formby,to see if I can spot any of these prehistoric footprints in the sand! 3/4 thousand years old, apparently! Along with remains of the forest that used to be, where the sea is now!! Shocked
Barbie

I'd like to see them too Mojo.
Barbie

I love walking by the sea Alice, on a cold day when you wrap up warm.

I walked to Calderstnes Park today, had a good walk round it before sitting down next to a guy whom the bench belong to, in memory of his late wife. He was 77 years old but you'd think he was years younger. I saw him doing Thai Chi, must be something in that.
Anyway, I was sad to see the glass house has been knocked down, I wonder what happend to the huge cacti in there?
Then I walked back to my local shops before heading home. It was a good wal and I have the blisters to prove it! (Bloody sandals!  Rolling Eyes )
John Rex

its heartening to see there are a fair number
of us who do enjoy walking
we must all be fit and slim

J.R.
Barbie

That's a good idea Alice, I'll try that.

JR, I'm 50 in a couple of weeks and I have to say, I'm a lot fitter than a lot of younger people who think nothing of spending £2 just for 4 bus stops. Kids get taken to school and picked up again in mum's car! No chance of walking off the burger and other fattening food stuffs they eat today. Yuck, all that fat, I couldn't eat one if I tried.
When I did Snowdon there were younger people who struggled to get to the top simply because they are not used to it. I don't mean them all, just an awful lot.
So all in all, I'm not so bad for 50!  Smile
John Rex

You mean literally,or doing the dance?  Laughing
MOJO

Walked from Crosby coastguard station,up to Hightown, today. About a 5 mile round trip,on a beautiful day! Smile The path goes all the way,or you can follow the rubble strewn beach, which I think is demolition material from Bootle, and surrounding area's,and used as a barrier against erosion,or go via the sand dunes, where there are the remains of fort Crosby,a WW2 army camp, which was demolished in th late 50's

MOJO

Looking at some of the rubble, you can see that some of it is from rather ornate, and large buildings, which I think might be WW2 bomb debris from Liverpool!?

MOJO

The local kids seem imaginative enough to utilise this giant Lego set!

Don't let the rubble put you off, though!

MOJO

I grew up thinking the river Alt,was one step up from a sewer,so it's surprising to see it's mouth, with yachts moored there!

MOJO

These are some pic's of the remaining bunkers, left from fort Crosby!

MOJO

...and this is how it did look,

...before being blown up!

Photo sources unknown.
Barbie

Mojo, thanks for sharing them photos, they're brilliant.
You can come across so much amazing stuff on foot! Well better than driving up and down a boring motorway any day.
You've made me want to rediscover Crosby now. Cheers!
MOJO

Thanks Barb',I'm rediscovering myself, just get your dayrider!! Smile

Here are a few pic's of the layers of "old" sand, which seem similar to the description of the one's were they found the 4,000 year old human, and animal footprints, further along,at Formby point! I don't know if you can make out the layers, and the fact that it looks like an oilslick, because it's darker than the surrounding sand!

Barbie

Looks rather cacky on the sand. Is it sand?
MOJO

Barbie wrote:

Ha,ha, it is! As I said, this is an old sand layer that's been exposed by the tides, etc!
brainbox

Great pics and info MOJO, That's a part of Merseyside not often highlighted.
MOJO

Thanks all!  Smile
                 A bit further along,near Hightown.

Imagine my surprise, when I spotted this.......I was honoured! Laughing

In the distance,in pic' 4,you can see Formby Point, and I had some idea of heading along that way, next time, but I'm not sure about public access,as Altcar shooting range backs on to it? Shocked
Barbie

Mojo, I love the boat pictures and to find one called after your alias is brill!  Very Happy
I think I am going to have a look that way next week. Fab!
MOJO

Thanks all.....more to come,if I dont get shot! Shocked
Barbie

I've not made it yet, been too much going on here, but I hope to before the winter sets in.

Barbie wrote:

Probably the best time,in autumn. Less people, and dog poo, in the dunes!
MOJO

A bit boring,I suppose, but I tried to continue my walk up to Formby point, but couldn't get past the firing range, whichever way I went! (sounded like they were practising for Helmand province!! Shocked )

There was some guy in that red box, watching me with binoculars!(hence the fuzzy pic' Laughing )

I thought I could get there,along this road,but...

You can just see a bridge over the river, but no access!

Barbie

I love your photos with the boats on.
I was on Formby beach few years back, well back in the 80's actually,  with my brother and our two dogs. A soldier came and told us we had to get off the beach cos they were using the firing range. I said I didnt want to (teenage attitude) and he got a gob on. Demanded to know what was in my carrier bag. I said, nothing and he said, what have you got. Probably thought I was a terrorist or something. I cringe and showwed him what I had.  Embarassed Can anybody guess what it was?
MOJO

.....a signed photo of Ken Dodd? surely it wasn't your a** Shocked  Laughing
MOJO

A few more boats...

MOJO

You can see how marshy the shore is,along there, and it can be quite slippy,as I nearly went on my 'arris,a couple of times! But if you look at these pic's,you can see something of the remains of the forest that used to be here, before the water level rose! Just some tree stumps, etc, now,but it went out several miles from where the boats are now, about 4,000 years back! Shocked !

brainbox

Barbie when the soldier stopped and searched your bag had you just been shopping for new drawers ?   Embarassed

MOJO , Great thread this mate , Your highlighting a part of our local area that isnt usually shown. It appears so natural and untouched by human hand  in certain parts . Its sad the coastal erosion is having such an effect , but I guess that's just nature taking its natural course . Take care there though mate it looks like the Military area is still pretty active....very funny about you being under observation by the soldier , no wonder your hand was shaking when you took the Fuzzy photo.   Very Happy
MOJO

Thanks B.B.
but that's the ironic thing about it,much of the present dunes are artificial,as you can see, when walking over building rubble, etc,on the tracks through them! The explanatory sign that I saw near Altcar, said the shooting range itself was landfill!!  It seems they've been playing about with the coastline, for some time, and in altering the mouth of the river Alt,in years gone by,it caused the tidal flow of the Mersey to change, which eroded the seafront in Blundellsands, and caused the collapse or demolition,of the mansions which once stood there!
After this happened, they then built a tidal barrier to deflect the current, which is still there now.
I've got some pic's of these.....somewhere??

P.S. Thanks Valencia,it is the Alt!
Barbie

Just a few of the things that took my eye on my walk about today. I wasn't alone today, my son accompanied me for a while. Sorry bout the photos' quality, I've messed up the settings so a lot of things apear too light.
