Hi i am new here but just love the photos, you say why did the the council place it there?

it does say so, on the sign!?
brainbox

where is this

Barbie

I love it but, I'm keeping my gob shut....  Wink
MOJO

The Mersey tunnel entrance! The original got smashed up! Mad
brainbox

Correct MOJO, and I think Barbie knew too, yes its just on the left paved area as you come around the roundabout to enter the Tunnel at the Old Hey market. I only spotted it yesterday, I was unaware of its existence prior to then and presumably, if it has always been sited there, then I will have driven past it hundreds and hundreds of times...Amazing the things you see in our City when on foot.  Shame about the original being smashed,,,any pics of the original ?.. and was it originally located elsewhere ?.

MOJO

It seems like so many things,in Liverpool, you hear about them, after they've gone! I've a vague memory of a news item re' the present mosaic being sited, sometime in the 80's,and the fate of the original, which possibly ended up in a workman's garden,or landfill,as was the supposed destination of the beacon below!  Mad

Barbie

Beeb, I have never knowingly seen that before, I just know where you went yesters and so made an assumption. Now the assumption was incorrect.... Laughing
Thanks for showing me it, will take a wander to see it one day soon.
brainbox

I think this Design Plan from the late 1920s may be showing the former position of the original mosaic

MOJO

Haven't been able to find any pic's of the original mosaic, but apparently, the one there now is a copy? Here's the story of what happened to the original mosaic........typical!!!

Barbie, Thats quite a good guess... wrong , but a good guess   Razz
I snapped this one a week or so ago , It is on what is now The Liverpool University Building in Pembroke Place , formerly part of the Royal Hospital.
If you go to google and come up Daulby Place  at its junction wth Pembroke place then its looking at you behind the Railings
What mystifies me is the date , as The Hospital was built about 1890. I assume this was a later extension ?
Barbie

Ah righty ho......  Very Happy

[quote="brainbox:23019"]What was this ,and where is it

This is the site of a former Quarry in the Everton District. It can be seen from Mark Street at the Everton Valley end of Netherfield Rd North.
Below is a Herdman Print of the Quarry in production , showing it prior to being partly backfilled  which eventually allowed for the formation of Mark Street.
Comparison of the two images shows the extent of the backfilling

St Domingo Road and another Quarry known as Cobbs Quarry lie in the distance just ahead of the heights of this quarry.
Go to Google Streetview for Mark Street to see the full extent of the area today
