Windy weather!

Went for a run over to New Brighton, but the wind was getting up....

Barbie

Great pics Mojo. I feel ccccold just looking at them.  Laughing I've not been over there for about 3 years.

bit of a difference in the weather then!  Very Happy

Barbie

And of course, no thread is complete without an old shot to compare. As you all know, the Tower was once the tallest building in the country.
brainbox

good shots MOJO and Barbie, all that brings back memories of New Brighton days out when I was a kid. dont remember much about the Tower site apart from the fair and Dodgem cars.. remember the chippy in Victoria Rd , lovely chips and served in a cardboard tray with a wooden fork... never got that in any chippy in Liverpool at the time.. I thought it Dead Posh  haha.
Barbie

Yep, Victoria Road's chippy and the sweet shop, first and second call od ports!  Cool
Alice

Great pics MOJO of the wild weather!
MOJO

As it was so windy, headed over to the West float,in Birkenhead docks, which,as you can see,is much bigger than anything on the Liverpool side. This building is another fantastic creation of Jesse Hartley, who built the Albert dock, etc. It housed the engines for operating the locks, and bridges, and is surely to be saved?

(complete with incriminating shadow! Laughing)

...you can just make out the old rail tracks.

the Mersey ferries riding out the storm,in the distance!

This ship has been here for some years now! It was impounded for non-payment of port fee's,I think, and since, has sunk! Seems a waste not to have done something with it,though!

Barbie

Brilliant pics Mojo.
Jan

Great photo's mojo just love it when the sea is rough like that,, wouldn't want to be on a boat though,,love the dock ones ,, with the old rails and cobbles ...  love lookin at the old stone around the buildings and docks ,,,,brill ,, thanks Jan x Very Happy

Barbie you'res are great so calm compared to mojo's beautiful pics,,thanks Jan x Very Happy
MOJO

Thanks Barbie, and Jan! I quite like mooching around old docks, industrial sites, etc, though there aren't that many left untouched,as it were!
Though I support "Peel's" plans for the North docks,it's a pity they've fenced it all in now,so there's no accesss!(unless you sneak in through a bit of damaged fencing Smile )
Barbie

I love mooching anywhere. I was born to mooch! Roll on spring....i need to mooch!
MOJO

While mooching around the city centre, had a look at this old cafe which is off School lane,an odd place!?

nice the way they've incorporated the original signage!

..and this looks good.

Apparently, there was quite an ornate garden here,at the bottom of Seel st,which now runs into Liverpool1,at one time!

Still in Seel st. this was originally,"Beatle City",now P.S.S. who I worked for at one time!

..and this strange looking place is the "Kazimier Gardens"

Another nice renovation...the "Peacock"

...and round the corner...guess what? (with St. Lukes in the background)

Barbie

Brillinat pics Mojo, and the last building is great with or without your name on it! Good to tee the others put to use.

Well, that's yet another "mystery" building,as it doesn't fit in with the others, and is set at an angle?? Was this built before the present street plan,I wonder? Also, you can't seem to get to the front of it???

This piece of old wall might be part of......
Barbie

Very interesting. I'm gonna go see that!  Cool
brainbox

Great Pics MOJO, I enjoyed looking at them. The vast majority of people walking past those buildings wouldnt give it all a second glance, At one time, I was one of those kind of people, but since becoming interested in Local History , My eyes are everywhere ..so much history still around each corner despite the efforts of the Bulldozer

.. "Kazimier Gardens" .. I walked past that place one Saturday Afternoon and it is an open Garden type of Drinking area, full to bursting with Student type revelers , with music busting their eardrums  . Razz
MOJO

Much the same as me....now I'm forever tripping, etc, because I'm looking at some strange looking brick,or whatever! Smile My choice on Saturday was, shopping,or having a wander round,so I left her to it! Laughing
This has just reminded me of those pic's Barbie posted,of that wall at the side of the funeral director's,in Wavertree, where there was a dairy? I was driving down Prescot rd. near the old cinema(?) and while at the lights, spotted something similar, down an alley......so I'll have to go back for a look!
MOJO

Beatle city,as was!

Barbie

It still has a submarine look about it with the 'port holes'.
brainbox

here is that wall MOJO , and a bit of info on its origins , its  just next to the New Holt Pub

Yes barbie, just looked back at it and added a note,,its Philip Mayers and he dont share,,I have my own pics of it ,,and will post them later.
Barbie

Ta!
He might not share but I know how to nick the photos anyway!  Razz
brainbox

Here is that wall of the Old Lindleys Brewery in Kensington
Courtesy of Ged Fagan....he shares..

Barbie

Brilliant Beeb, ta for nick....errrr...sharing it.  Razz
MOJO

Great pic'B.B.Notice how similar that little"window" is? As for Philip G. I can only say he's had reason to (try) and stop people using his pic's!
MOJO

Continuing with some more pic's of Seel/Duke st. area....

With now only the ornate frontage of this building left,I remember it's incarnation as "Adam's" club(though it had several others!) which sort of followed on from "Eric's,in Mathew st! I saw amongst others,Mick Hucknall, when he was the singer in the Frantic Elevators! (Didn't think he'd go that far!!)

This is a Liverpool institution,as far as clubs go,the "Cabin" club, which seems to have been around forever! The old guy who owned it,used to stand at the door, picking out who could enter! Shocked

They've done a nice job on this building, over the rd. in Berry st.but it's a pity the pub next door has closed(again!) It's had several names over the years, and I can't remember any of them?? Confused  Smile

Just further along,is another local institution, the "Blue Angel"which has also been around since the stone age!Never knew it was known as the "Raz",apparently, after one of George Harrison's girlfriends!?!

As well as being famous for the Beatles,Dylan, etc, playing there,I'd forgotten it was the birthplace of Dr.W.Duncan,the first public health officer,in the country, with a pub named after him in St.John's lane!

brainbox

Superb collection of photos of some great buildings and i love it when accompanied by excellent background information too, Ta MOJO
Barbie

I love the photos Mojo.
Thanks for sharing and the info too.
MOJO

Ta,but does anyone have any names for that pub? (other than than it's last one,B.B. Wink )
Jan

Great photo's mojo ,, you seem to know a lot about  music and the clubs,,,,,,,,Jan
Barbie

Which one? The Metropolitan?
MOJO

Barbie wrote:

Yeh,I just can't recall any of them!!
...just had a mooch, and it was the"Black Horse and Rainbow, and "Trader Jack's",previously, but I'm almost sure it was the "Masonic",at least in the early 70's!
MOJO

Some more from around Seel st.

This is the "Salty Dog",a new one to me!

...and the "Pogue Mahone" which translates as "I Think you're Lovely! Laughing

One of what were many, warehouses in the area! This is unusual if you look at those tiny holes in the windows! Wonder what purpose they served?

Just off Seel st. is this small row of houses,in Bailey st.I don't know what they have to put up with, but every door,is gated,or barred! Shocked

Does anyone know what this building was,in Colquitt st,I think? Looks like it was some type of college?

You can tell you're in "Chinatown" as even the council houses have an eastern influence!

Cut through to Duke st. to be confronted by one of our old friends, the lambanana, along with a couple of his mates!

These georgian houses have been altered and used as business premises, for years, but now lie empty! Just hope they don't suffer the fate of the end terrace, and get replaced by something so faceless, though I must admit, they look better in the pic' than in reality!!

One of the original fronts.

The "Munro" gastro-pub,which now does good business, after being closed for a few years!

I remember this little house being up for sale,in the 90's,for £12,000?

These properties in York st.are in the process of being turned back into public use.

..another odd looking warehouse!

...and at the bottom of the street, some that have been brought back into use!

Barbie

Amazing lot of photos there Mojo. I will take time to study them later. Thanks for sharing though.
MOJO

Thanks Barbie, hope it's not over the top! Shocked
brainbox

An amazing set of photos MOJO thanks for taking the effort of uploading them and sharing them here. As barbie rightly commented, they deserve to be studied on in depth and then maybe commented on later Ta Matey.....
OH and I found the info on the Metropolitan and I have posted it over to the Pubs thread so as its not overlooked by anyone looking in.
MOJO

Ta,B.B.!
Barbie

(Mojo, I copied and pasted your pic)

This is Cornwallis Street Mojo, the street where the first public baths were. Do you think it could be connected? Maybe I'm being daft but could this have been the baths?  Question
Barbie

Just found out that the building over the road from yours was in fact the baths.
That is this one:

MOJO

...now flat's,it looks like,of course!? Hope they can do something with the opposite one??
Jan

Love this building just brill ... what is happening to it,,, surely not pulling it down ,,,,,,those lovely windows the brickwork ,,and what did drive in and out of there ,,Jan x
MOJO

I'm probably wrong, but I remember a "Secret Millionaire" episode,at a building used as a hostel of some sort, in Liverpool, and I thought maybe this was it??
MOJO

Started off by the coastguard station in Crosby...

....watching these guy's!

Down to Regent rd,(dock rd.) where it's now blocked off. This was a cafe..

...opposite the "Langton Castle"

Further along,spotted this!

This building was an engine works for Harland & Wolfe. You can just make out some lettering over the arch. The little door to the left,is usually open, and has a toilet! Smile

Not sure what these are used for,as they have catamaran type hulls, and apparently Welsh!?

Along to the Canada dock, scrap mountains!

Wellington dock gates, with the now disused pumping station, which will hopefully,be conserved?!

The "slot" was for the gates.(just in case you wondered Smile )

A smaller traditional warehouse, which have mainly disappeared!

Grayson,Rollo, which was an engineering, and ship repair company, with a yard next to Cammel,Laird. It became western ship repairer's, before going under!

Have to finish,it won't let me post any more!! Smile
brainbox

MOJO that was a cracker collection of Shots from around the Northern Dock Area, thanks for taking the time to upload all the images its a shame the gremlins in the forum structure prohibited you from sharing more. I hope  you are able to succeed in putting the rest of the set up here soon .
My particular favourites are the ones of the old warehouses and dock buildings , so much history of former days of our maritime trading and peoples lives are locked into the brickwork of those structures.   Ta !
Barbie

Mojo, excellent lot of photos there, well done. It's places like thess that I love but I wont go walking round there on my own.
I saw that engineering building on google maps the other night and it took my eye.
Cheers mate. Cool
MOJO

Thanks B.B.and Barbie!  Strange, still wont let me post in this thread, but o.k. in others? Maybe there's a limit??

As for walking around on your own,Barbie, there's not usually many people around,I know, but there are plenty of gatemen, and regular runs around the area,by the police, who have actually told people not to take photo's! The traffic can be quite busy,at times,as it's a quick run up from town,at speed!
MOJO

Would someone else try posting in this thread? I can't figure why it stopped half-way through a folder?? Confused

Jan

Just love these pics mojo,,, love the clock... what are the two yellow structures,,,, and is that a net across the dock ???,,,,,,,,,,,,Jan x Very Happy
MOJO

It was some type of rig being towed up the river, from Laird's! Not sure what you mean about the net, though I have to take these through the railings!? Confused
Jan

On the clock pics,,, it has a string of bouys across the dock,, i thought it was a net,,,,, my son just said, it looks like ,,,to stop boats entering the area,,,Jan x Very Happy
MOJO

Oh,right,I was looking in the distance(with my one eye!) There are now,no vessels in the dock itself,so maybe that's why!?
MOJO

An old one this, from 1974! Stanley dock, with the clubship "Landfall" when she was still in use,(now rusting away in Birkenhead, somewhere!)and the Liverpool pilot boat, which has possibly gone west, now?!

MOJO

Coburg dock.1965. Those silo's in the background,have well gone,now!

MOJO

Barbie

Great pics mate! The 'warehouse' is very interesting and eye catching! Looks like the old days up to date,if you get my drift.
MOJO

I think this was used by customs and excise, till recently, but is now lying empty! Confused
MOJO

....windy weather back again, me fence has gone! Crying or Very sad  Very Happy
MOJO

Windy again, tonight........still haven't fixed my fence! Very Happy
Liobian2
