A great collection of pics here I am enjoying looking through them all.  New Brighton has played such a big part in so many peoples lives .
It was first developed in the early 1830s by a James Atherton . He was a well to do Merchant & Landowner at that time living on Everton Hill just to the rear of St Georges Church Netherfield Rd,.
From his house and gardens he had an uninterupted view of the as of yet undeveloped area of the Wirral peninsular/
He eventually bought the land with the intenion of turning it into an exclusive seaside residential area and based his  plans on that of Brighton which was already a very popular Place in the South of the Country, hence the Name New Brighon.
James Atherton actually relocated there with his family , but I think after he died his wishes were for his body to be returned back to Everton and if I am not mistaken he was laid to rest back up on tthe hill in St Georges graveyard [,,,,,,,,,I hope I have that last bit correct.. I will check later and ammend if need be
Razz ]
